Minocycline 50mg Hcl Information

USES: Minocycline 50mg is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, that is, it inhibits the growth of bacteria, it has a strong anti-inflammatory action which is very helpful when treating a condition like acne.

Minocycline 50mg is used in the treatment of the following conditions:

HOW TO USE: Take Minocycline 50mg tablets or capsules by mouth with a full glass of water. If possible take a sleep time dose at least 10 minutes before lying down to sleep. It is best to take Minocycline 50mg without food as food and milk reduce absorption, but if it upsets your stomach take it with food.

SIDE EFFECTS: Minocycline 50mg side effects that usually do not require medical attention include: diarrhea, discolored tongue or teeth, drowsiness, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or sore mouth.

Minocycline side effects that you should report to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible include: dark yellow or brown urine; difficulty breathing, fever, headache, increased sensitivity to the sun or ultraviolet light, itching in the rectal or genital area, pain on swallowing, redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, stomach pain or cramps, skin rash or itching, unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness, yellowing of eyes or skin.

PRECAUTIONS: Your doctor needs to know if you have any of these conditions: kidney disease, liver disease, long exposure to sunlight (working outdoors), an unusual or allergic reaction to minocycline, or other tetracycline type antibiotics. If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding do not use minocycline.

Do not take Minocycline 50mg just before going to bed. It may not dissolve properly when you are lying down and can cause ulceration of your food pipe.

Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing outdoors and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths.

Birth control pills (contraceptive pills) may not work properly while you are taking this antibiotic. Use an extra method of birth control for at least one month.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how Minocycline affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient.

If you are being treated for a sexually transmitted disease, avoid sexual contact until you have finished your treatment. Your sexual partner may also need treatment.

Antacids can stop Minocycline 50mg working. If you get an upset stomach and want to take an antacid, make sure there is an interval of at least 2 hours since you last took Minocycline 50mg, or 4 hours before your next dose.


DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Before taking Minocycline 50mg, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs: cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid). Antacids: Tums, Rolaids, Milk of Magnesia, Maalox, and others, Pepto-Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate), minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements,didanosine (Videx),a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin),sucralfate (Carafate),penicillin antibiotic such as amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, others), penicillin (BeePen-VK, Pen-Vee K, Veetids, others), dicloxacillin (Dynapen), carbenicillin (Geocillin), oxacillin (Bactocill), and others, or ,methoxyflurane (an inhaled anesthetic gas used during surgery).

Also tell your doctor if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works.

NOTES:If you miss a dose of Minocycline, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be an interval of at least 4 to 6 hours between doses. Keep Minocycline out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store Minocycline at room temperature between 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F). Protect from light and moisture. Throw away any unused Minocycline after the expiration date.

Overdose of Minocycline

Symptoms of an Minocycline overdose include dizziness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
